When we become very, very good at something and get used to the kudos, the praise, the success, the sense of satisfaction our expertise brings, us we can become reluctant to expand further, to move forward into areas where we are NOT competent; areas where we lack confidence, where we feel awkward and clumsy as we acquire new skill sets. That is the Competency Curse.
In today’s fast changing world, failure to recognize and dispel the Competency Curse can quickly leave you obsolete and out dated. A life devoted to continuous learning and personal and professional growth is the solution. The key is to change in a gradual but non-stop manner, to change at your volition, at the time and pace of your choosing rather than ignore the inevitable and then to be forced into abrupt and painful change of which you have little to no control. The wise choose ongoing, controlled, directed change before a crisis demands sudden, uncontrolled change.
