In hard times, in times of unusual risk or even potential danger, when things are in flux, when uncertainty lies all around, people desperately need leadership. It is at such times that capable leaders reach down deep inside themselves and find the strength to do the simplest yet hardest thing: Stay Calm.
Easy to say, sounds so simple, when things are peaceful and serene yet it can be very, very challenging to do in the heat of the moment, when many around you are overwhelmed, panic is beginning to spread, and the prophets of doom and gloom begin to flood the media, each attempting to grab the most attention by outdoing all others with apocalyptic visions. Emotions are contagious; nervousness, anxiety, dread, anxiety especially so and as people turn to leaders for direction and guidance, the leader becomes a focal point for these intense emotions.
This is when the best of leaders demonstrate the traits of equanimity that qualify them for the honor of being a leader: the ability to display evenness of mind; composure, calmness, especially under conditions that tend to excite great emotion. Calm is palpable even tangible yet the same is also true for fear or stupidity. Great leaders keep perspective, display serenity and confidence even as the storm rages, setting the tone and thus manifesting the reality they project.
