After having read it years ago, I am now listening to Micky Singer’s ‘Untethered Soul’ on Audible in my car. Micky uses the analogy of driving down a road watching trees as they pass by. You are in the present moment and as soon as the trees pass by, they pass out of your consciousness, you do not hold on to them.
The point being that if anything stays in your mind, it is because you are holding it there. If it serves you to hold it there, so be it. If you are actively engaged in productive solution finding, terrific. However, if it bothers you, if you are worrying about it, stressing about it, if you are spinning your wheels, running a gerbil wheel marathon of obsession, remember that it is YOU that is holding it in your mind, in your consciousness. The moment you let go of it, it is gone.
Just like those passing trees. ‘Passing trees’ become a new mantra for me; I’ve found it very helpful when I find myself holding on to what I need to release to simply visualize driving along with trees passing along the roadside and allow any non-productive thoughts to join them in passing.
