‘What Fires Together Wires Together’ is from Hebb’s Rule, a neuropsychological theory explaining the increase in synaptic efficacy arising from one cell’s repeated and persistent stimulation of another cell. Yet it also has explanatory power for human behavior. For better or for worse we tend to adapt to and align with those around us. Bonds form and group norms emerge; an informal emotional economy emerges; a micro culture is established.
Since your environment is continuously subtly (and at times not so subtly) shaping you, it is vital that you choose your life companions with care, that you remain aware of their impact, that you take the time to become quiet and reflect upon the currents and winds that are nudging you in one direction or another. Daily, the effect is minimal, illusive, slight. Compounded? Huge!
