The price of security is, ironically, a deep awareness of insecurity. Or at least an ongoing appreciation of the fragility of any form of safety and the need to be prepared for calamity, to have reserves including a well-funded rainy-day account and a strong network of support. The biggest threat to champions is complacency. I’ve always operated as if a ravenous wolf was prowling around my yard, in the belief that if I didn’t, sooner or later the wolf would be banging away at my front door.
