A compass with "core values" written where the needle points north

Never, Nevers are your core absolutes, parts of you that are foundational to your very being, central to your identity. Some come from your upbring, some seem to spring from your DNA; others you consciously choose and embed deep in your self-concept.

I distinctly remember my 1st chosen never, nevers: I was barely double digits in age, and I could see folks all around me getting in their own way (ok, mainly my bi-polar, disorganized, impulsive mom). I resolved to always be on my own side, to have a plan, to not fritter life away, to act with reason and purpose, to be disciplined, to live no ordinary life. This orientation toward positivity and solution-oriented perspectives was later reinforced by my civil engineer dad who taught me to always ‘walk on the sunny side of the street.’

A runner friend of mine who lives near the intercoastal has a never, never I love: “Never stop on the bridge.” Which illustrates a terrific thing about never, nevers: while they are often specific to a certain aspect of life, they have a much larger halo effect. As Jim Rohn said: “For every disciplined effort there is a multiple reward.”

What are your never, nevers?
