Okay, it is a bit more complex than that but the thoughts you dwell on are the building blocks of the life you are creating. Your world view, your self-concept, your beliefs about who you are and what you are capable of form the boundaries of your personal reality. As Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) famously said: “Most men take the limits of their own field of vision for the limits of the world.” We label our personal perspectives as unchangeable objective reality and thus, for us, they become true, a self-fulfilling prophecy that potentially binds us to be less than we can be. We in effect become our own jailers.
Yet we can also liberate ourselves, however dismantling the thought pattern prison we have constructed and building ourselves a monument worthy of our best selves takes dedication, devotion, and resolute commitment: time, energy, and effort. Persistence and resilience. True Grit. To be different, to be better, we must first learn to think, plan, and act better… over and over and over… at ever higher levels, analyzing any setback for the lesson within and then proceeding forward, perhaps occasionally plateauing yet always resolved to continue onward.
As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. You may not (yet) be able to control the thoughts that come to mind, but you can control the thoughts that stay in mind, and these are the thoughts that shape your future. Your thoughts, your life, your choice.
Closing Quote:
“Watch your thoughts for they become emotions.
Watch your emotions for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they will become habits.
Watch your habits, for they will become character.
Watch your character, for it will become your destiny.”
