Sometimes knowing what we don’t want can be as motivational as knowing what we want. Fear is a powerful driving force as is loss aversion, the human tendency to attach more pain to loss than to an equal gain. None of us want burnout or a toxic relationship but without clarity, we can find ourselves forgetting to schedule in times of recovery, rest, and relaxation or ignoring red flags simply because we have not properly clarified our ‘nots’, ‘never-evers’, our anti-goals.

“Instead of thinking through what we wanted our perfect day to look like, we thought about the worst day imaginable and how to avoid it.” – Andrew Wilkinson
“Anti-goals guide individuals in avoiding toxic patterns and nurturing healthy connections; recognizing and avoid the negative patterns or behaviors detrimental to their relationships.” – Dev Chandra
