Anyone who thinks that positive thinking will solve all their problems is delusional. That is not positive thinking, that is wishful thinking. Life is full of setbacks, disappointments, and negative events. Accept it. A sunny disposition is not a magical forcefield to ward away problems.
However, optimism WILL help you deal with the potholes and roadblocks of life, enable you to keep your energy levels up while you endeavor to turn stumbling blocks to stepping stones, adjust your sails to keep your ship headed to your goals as the winds of fortune shift and change.
“No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, sailed to an uncharted land or opened up new heavens to the human spirit.” – Helen Keller, 1880-1968
“Optimism is a strategy for making a better future, for unless you believe the future can be better you are unlikely to step up and accept responsibility for making it so.” – Norm Chomsky, b. 1928, “father of modern linguistics”, major figure in analytic philosophy, a founder of cognitive science
“An optimist understands that life can be a bummer but at least it is leading somewhere. They learn from mistakes and failures and are not afraid to try again.” – Harvey MacKay, b. 1932, ‘Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive’, ‘Beware the Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt’, ‘We Got Fired! . . . And It’s the Best Thing that Ever Happened to Us’ (NYT #1 best seller)
As always, I share what I most want and need to learn. – Nathan S. Collier
