The formation of emotions is complex and almost always occurs beneath the level of our conscious awareness and there is also usually a delay between their creation and their arrival in our outer world. Nonetheless, it is possible to tease out linkages and begin to achieve some degree of control and even eventually of mastery.

Many emotions arise from our world view, from the stories we tell ourselves to explain events, to make sense of the cosmos. We may not realize it, but this is just a form of programing ourselves. If I tell myself that I’m a victim, that the world is unfair and I’m being mistreated, then I’m sowing the seeds of anger, creating toxic, explosive, vitriolic fumes inside myself, an explosive mixture that can be all too easily triggered, prompting a disproportionate response to relatively unimportant things.

If my belief system is that I have choices, that I have the ability to find solutions, that the primary point of power is within me, that problems and setbacks are a normal part of life, that where there is a will, there is a way; that optimism and resilience will attract allies and supporters… well, my energy levels and emotions I create will be very different.
