Do you see ego as a reflection of yourself, something you need to defend and protect? Or do you see ego as a tool? A life force you can dial Up or Down as suits the circumstances? Dialing up your confidence level with affirmations before a big challenge, a speech or athletic competition? Dialing ego down when it gets in the way? When feeling insulted or belittled creates strong emotions that interfere with your ability to respond effectively?
Seeing ego as one more tool (instead of who you are) in your life management skills toolbox is a very valuable, powerful mindset. The ability to control and direct your emotions, to stay calm under stress and pressure is a true superpower.
“The ego is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image, it is your social mask, it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control and it lives in fear.” – Ram Dass
“The moment you become aware of the ego in you, it is strictly no longer the ego but just an old, conditioned mind patter. Ego implies unawareness. Awareness and ego cannot coexist.” – Eckhart Tolle
“If someone corrects you and you feel offended, then you have an ego problem.” – Nouman Ali Khan
“Big egos are big shields for lots of empty space.” – Diana Black
