I’m going to combine several of my favorite sayings:
1) ‘You tend to become the sum total of the 5 people you spend the most time with.’
2) ‘Attitudes are contagious, are you around one’s worth catching?’
3) ‘When you know the power of your thoughts, you never think another negative thought again.’
The message is that we often seriously underestimate the adverse effect of ‘bad apples’ in our lives. The truth is they can have a powerful, detrimental impact that ripples through us and, unfortunately, from us to others. The energy drain is significant and real. Be fully aware of the ‘Emotional Energy’ of the environments in which you choose to spend your time, for they are strongly impacting you, for better or for worse. Emotional contagion, the ‘Bad Apple Effect’ is real and strong.
Closing Quotes:
“The energy you create with your emotions has substance. The relational field is palpable and powerful.” – Marcia Reynolds, ‘Coach the Person, Not the Problem’
“Emotional contagion, though, suggests… If I can make you smile, I can make you happy. If I can make you frown, I can make you sad. Emotion, in this sense, goes outside-in.” – Malcolm Gladwell, ‘The Tipping Point’
“Emotions Are Contagious: We influence each other’s moods. Influencing another person’s emotional state for the better or worse is perfectly natural; we do it constantly, ‘catching’ emotions from one another like some kind of social virus. This emotional exchange constitutes an invisible interpersonal economy, part of every human interaction, but is usually too subtle to notice.” – Daniel Goleman, ‘Working With Emotional Intelligence’
As always, I share what I most want and need to learn. – Nathan S. Collier
