Affirmations work best via endless (and I do mean endless) repetition. Over and Over and Over again until they are DEEPLY implanted in your unconsciousness. BUT they also work best when they are personalized and customized to your individual taste. There are some terrific affirmations out there and if they work well for you, awesome! For me, I’ve always found the more aligned my affirmations are with me, the more they speak to me and sink in deeper and faster.
So when I journal, I play with words and phrases over time, seeking the tone, the inflection or terminology that resonates strongest within me. Sometimes it can take a while for them to come together, but when they jell, they are impactful and I sometimes think it is the process, the birthing that imparts them with some of their dynamism, their effectiveness.
For example, every year I pick of few things to work on; this year it was four:
- Listening better
- Becoming calmer
- Strength training/flexibility
- Posture
All good things but how to make them truer for me? It took time, but I came up with the following affirmations:
- I will Listen with Love, I will Hear with my Heart
- Calmness is my New Superpower
- I will live Long, I will Live Strong
- Posture Projects Power
- Lift is Life, Stretching is Strength
A subtle but powerful form of motivation is immersion/repetition: “What you Focus on Expands” and “Thoughts Held in Mind Attract in Kind”. A second and even stronger source of motivation is your self-concept, your self-image. We tend to automatically act in ways consistent with our beliefs about ourselves, our self-image, our self-concept. Repeat something often enough, it tends to become part of you. Affirmations provide a way to ignite both of those forms of motivation.
