Everyone on Wall Street wants to be the “Alpha Dog”, the best of the best, top of the heap, the Top 1%. Well, I want to be best of the best, Top 1% too. I just have a much longer range definition, a different strategy. All that I want to be is in the Top 25%. That’s all, just the top quadrant. BUT I want to be there EVERY year for 25 years!
If I can do that, top 25% every year for 25 years straight, then my outcomes, my cumulative returns, will be in the Top 1%. You see, few stay in the top tier consistently, they porpoise in and out, up and down and overall, rarely consistent in their production. Even worse, driven by excessive ambition or corrosive competition or rampant ego or toxic pressure, some defer needed maintenance, neglect important inspections, overlook upkeep, ignore safeguards, push themselves to take excessive risks, cut vital corners. Sooner or later, life catches up with most of them and they implode, all too often causing suffering for the innocent.
Embrace the Art of the Long View, forget flashy, aim for solid and steady. Reliable and abiding will win far more races than you might think. Plus, life will be a lot more enjoyable.
