Can you sense the atmosphere? Catch the vibe? Feel the energy? Pick up on social cues, subtle body language, social context in real time? Fleeting, micro facial expressions? Notice when the emotional temperature changes? Follow the undercurrents? Forecast the emotional climate? Hear what isn’t being said?
The ability to accurately judge a social situation is a subset of Emotional Intelligence or EQ. Humans are incredibly complex, even more so in groups. Cues are incredibly contextual; crossed arms can be a distancing, defensive signal or a sign of unease and insecurity (situation specific? global personality trait?) or merely that they are cold… or they could just be mimicking the person opposite them, consciously or subconsciously building rapport! A skilled social perceiver is first and foremost an observer who has disciplined themselves to pay attention at a far deeper level than most; scientists call it attentional control.
It takes patience and effort, however anyone can improve their emotional radar and upgrade their social antennae, first by striving to raise their overall EQ, then by consciously assuming the role of a listening observer who actively focuses on group dynamics. The number one hinderance is that we tend to be too self-absorbed, too preoccupied with our own thoughts and social insecurities. “How am I doing?” crowds out “What is happening here?”
