A TCC Team Member reached out with the above inquiry. Surprise! Interesting enough, I’ve read a few!

Hiring is like 3 dates and getting married; ability is one of the hardest things to judge; it is so easy to confuse pleasing personality and agreeable words with actual results. Then separating out individual performance from team performance… plus a rising market makes everyone look good and then there is luck; bad and good. Until I’ve worked with someone directly over an extended period of time and in a variety of situations and challenges, I really have no idea of their true skillset.

I enjoyed Recruit Rockstars; vital to do your best to hire A’s, if you miss usually worst case end up with a B. Mentoring and developing can turn a B into a B+ maybe even an A- but it is highly unlikely to raise someone more than a letter grade i.e. C+ to even an A-. It can happen and I love it when it does, when someone surprises you with unseen mega potential but it’s not a business plan to count on it.

People need Purpose in their lives, they need a ‘Why’. TCC’s is that one’s home is very important to their spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing and it is an HONOR to be entrusted with providing someone’s home and this imposes a significant duty on us. If you feel that sense of obligation, please, please go work for our competition!

We owe people to share vital truth about meaningful aspects of their performance that could help them grow. Along with that comes a duty to deliver our message with a clean heart and no other agenda than their growth and wellbeing. Too often we shy away from challenging conversations because we fear confrontation and a deterioration in the relationship. We lie to ourselves and kid ourselves that we are being kind but the reality is we are being cowardly and doing a disservice to them, ourselves, and the organization we both belong to.

Most books on feedback are how to Deliver feedback; this is the only one I’ve seen on how to Receive it! It is vital to establish openness to mentoring/coaching during the hiring/onboarding process. Most folks say they are open to coaching… they just don’t like criticism. But even if you disagree, it gives you insight into the others’ thought process, believe systems and point of view and properly responded to, can be the start of a great dialogue.
