If the words you choose to use are consistently positive (including your inner self talk), you most likely have an optimistic view of life and approach situations with an assured, cheerful attitude which in turn supports a confident self-concept. Not surprisingly, this attracts like-minded people into your life further reinforcing an upward spiral; your words shaping and creating your world.
While I’m always cautious of drawing excessive conclusions from studies of human behavior (sample sizes tend to be small, hard to make truly random, most are observational only, much behavior is self-reported and humans being human, difficult to have control groups), studies exist correlating positive language with increased life expectancy. (Critical thinking skill caution: correlation is not causation: 100% of people who take high school physics eventually die!)
Scientists can only speculate:
“there are physiological changes that occur in conjunction with arousing positive emotional experiences (improved vagal tone, increased endogenous opioids) that contribute to better health.”
“may improve health through their influences on immune and cardiovascular function and may also aid in buffering physiological stress responses.”
For me, well, my dad told me a long time ago that life was more pleasant, and you met nicer people “on the sunny side of the street.” If there are health benefits, so much the better.
