Life is complex. While there is much truth in the adage, “feelings buried alive never die” there is also a place for “letting bygones be bygones.” Which is a matter of self-awareness and your predictive intelligence; how skilled you are at forecasting your ability to process events and emotions. Unless something is of meaningful significance and likely to repeat, my default reaction, particularly once the moment of immediate response has passed, is to release.
My personality has strong forward focus and I believe that the past should be a place of reference not residence and I can’t change it anyway. That said, if something is staying with you in a negative or toxic way and your repeated efforts to release are coming to naught, then deal with it, face it squarely. Don’t kid yourself, trying to bury a strong feeling is akin to swallowing a live hand grenade. May have a long fuse, but it’s ticking away.
