“The Power of Mattering” by Zach Mercurio speaks to the viral importance of acknowledging Team Members’ presence and contributions, how their unique skills and efforts make a difference, that they are essential and relied upon. I have always been extremely task-oriented, and it is only with the slowly accumulating wisdom of the years that I have learned the incredible power of the soft side when linked in and allied with hard skills.
Zach uses the acronym NAN to convey his message:
- Noticing
-
- Actively see and hear Team Members, acknowledging their presence and contributions.
- Affirming
-
- Show Team Members how their unique skills and efforts make a difference in the organization.
- Needing
-
- Communicate to Team Members that they are essential, valued, and relied upon.
