Life. Stuff happens. Some of it beyond bad, other stuff beyond a doubt awesomely wonderful. But most stuff lies in between those extremes and that is where choice comes in. How we interpret the stuff that happens, how we frame it, how we deal with it, how we remember it. Basically, the stories we choose to tell ourselves, the narrative we spin.
Have no doubt: In more ways than you may be willing to accept, your life is akin to a movie and you are the script writer, the cast director, and the star all rolled into one. And in large measure, the roles of the other cast members are mostly responses to your world view, your beliefs about what is possible, your self-concept as demonstrated by your words, actions, and behaviors.
We’ve all watched shows where we want to shout out “Don’t do it!” to the actors or give advice/insights (“You can do better!”) that seem glaringly obvious to us but not to them. Imagine for a moment you are sitting in the audience in a dark theater watching “your” movie, the one with you in the leading role, and you are given the opportunity to write the next scene, even to direct the balance of the movie all the way to the ending.
What will you script?

“I’m singing in the rain, Just singing in the rain. What a glorious feeling I’m happy again. I’m laughing the clouds, So dark up above. The sun’s in my heart And I’m ready for love. Let the stormy clouds chase Everyone from the place. Come on with the rain, I have a smile on my face. I walk down the lane, With a happy refrain. And I’m singing, just singing in the rain!” – Gene Kelly, 1912-1996
As always, I share what I most want and need to learn. – Nathan S. Collier
