In many, many ways the Quality of our Lives is directly connected to the Quality of our Thoughts. Fill your mind with fears, doubts, anger, resentment, and limits and you will experience a life full of fears, doubts, anger, resentment, and limits. Fill your mind with contentment, happiness, hope, love, joy, optimism, and positivity and you will, by and large, experience a life full of contentment, happiness, hope, love, joy, optimism, and positivity.
I am not advocating living in denial; a dedication to truth and acceptance of reality are part of Scott Peck’s “Four Tools of Discipline” in the ‘Road Less Traveled’. At the same time, EVERY situation can be viewed from multiple perspectives, every event can be re-framed in some way that will aid us in dealing with it. Stumbling block or stepping stone, which it is often lies in our interpretation. Or as Shakespeare wrote, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” (Hamlet Act 2, scene 2, lines 239–251)
My favorite re-framing word is “Interesting!” It covers a multitude of situations and removes much of the reflexively attached emotion and helps me respond with a cooler head, and a calmer, solution-oriented mindset. Worrying and focusing on your fears is nothing but pessimistic programing and negative visualization. You are the programmer, you are the director of that film starring YOU: write a great script, write only code that strengthens you.
